Orange Walk- The newly rehabilitated and expanded farmers’ market in Orange Walk Town was officially opened on Thursday, April 26th, 2018.
Financing in the amount of BZ$$554,986.10 was provided by the European Union through funds from the Accompanying Measures for Sugar (AMS 2013) programme, which supports the Government’s Sugar Adaptation Strategy with counterpart funds by the Government of Belize.
Two objectives of the Sugar Adaptation Strategy are to foster diversification of the agricultural production base in the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts; and to minimize the overall macroeconomic impacts on the communities of the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts, that result from reductions in the guaranteed prices for Belize’s sugar exports and competition in a more liberalized market.
The market is the centre where farmers bring their produce to sell. The market now counts with adequate facilities and will improve and enhance the economy and quality of life of the vendors using the market facility. The works entailed the renovation of 11 stalls and the building of 10 new stalls.
Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security Elodio Aragon Jr, Orange Walk Town Mayor Mr. Kevin Bernard, National Authorizing Office Mrs. Yvonne Hyde along with the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Belize, Ambassador H.E. Malgorzata Wasilewska, officiated the function. Representatives of the contracting firm, JEBCO Construction Ltd, as well as other senior public officials, also participated in the inauguration ceremony.
