Punta Gorda- Minister of National Emergency Management Hon Edmond Castro last Friday paid a working visit to Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District.
Castro was welcomed to the municipality by Punta Gorda Mayor Fern Gutierrez and he accompanied NEMO District Coordinator Kenton Parham and Assistant Coordinator Dennis Williams on an inspection of areas where flood mitigation works have been carried out in that town and surrounding communities over the past six weeks.
Those areas, which are known to be susceptible to seasonal flooding, include Hopeville, Magoon Area, Cattle Landing and Jacintoville.
Mayor Fern Gutierrez thanked the Minister and NEMO for the works carried out and said she is certain that it will greatly alleviate the flooding situation. Hon Castro, for his part, said he is pleased that his Ministry and NEMO have been able to assist in this regard.
The works carried out in Punta Gorda are part NEMO’s countrywide Flood Mitigation Program. Similar works have been executed this year in Rural Belize District, Corozal and Cayo District, including San Ignacio and Bullet Tree which were also recently affected by severe flooding. This coming week flood mitigation works will commence in the Stann Creek District in villages such as Red Bank, Sarawee and Hope Creek.
